Current Rankings

Full-distance and 70.3 results, rolling 36 months (since 16 Aug 2023), combined onto one difficulty-adjusted scale. Sum of each athlete's best 5 race scores, capped at 2 Full-distance races.

How the score works

Per race: score = (distance baseline ÷ (finish time × age-grading factor ÷ race-day difficulty score)) × 100. 100 = an M30-34-baseline-pace performance once course difficulty is accounted for. In the AGI system, the Kona-standard age-grading factor is applied so every age group is compared on one fair scale. In the Open system, that factor is removed entirely (treated as 1.0 for everyone) — a pure distance-and-difficulty-adjusted pace ranking, no age normalization. Everything else is identical between the two. Full-distance race scores are then multiplied by 1.2 for the extra difficulty of the distance — proportional to how well the athlete did, not a flat add-on. Both distances' race averages are on the same basis (overall time, transitions included).

Per athlete (Points Ranking): the 5 highest race scores are summed (not averaged) — but capped at 2 Full-distance races, with the remaining slots filled by the athlete's best 70.3 races. This stops a Full-heavy race calendar from out-ranking stronger athletes purely on volume. An athlete with 0 or 1 Full race in the window just fills the rest with 70.3. A sum measures accumulated body of work — it rewards racing more often, not just racing better, so an athlete with fewer qualifying races needs a proportionally higher average score just to match one who has raced more.

Per athlete (Performance Ranking): the same per-race scores, aggregated differently — the mean of the athlete's best 3 instead of the sum of up to 5. This isolates race-for-race quality from how many races were run. An athlete needs 3 or more qualifying races to be ranked here; with fewer than 3, a single standout result would outrank athletes with a proven, repeated performance level, so those athletes are shown with a race-count badge instead of a rank. Credit to Dr. Ian Cook (PhD, Exercise Science) for the performance based ranking methodology.

World Championship races: a qualifier-only field finishes far faster than a normal age-group field, which would make Worlds look artificially “easy” on a pure time basis. 70.3 Worlds is scored using the same course's own non-championship average from the nearest available year. Kona (Full-distance Worlds) has no rotating host to substitute from, so every Kona edition instead gets a fixed 1.0 difficulty score rather than one derived from its own field's time.

Age group shown is each athlete's most recent race in the window, which may differ from the age group on their scoring races if their birthday moved them up a bracket mid-window.
